Winter Is Finally Over, Here's 6 Ways to Celebrate the New Blooming Season
I may be biased because I was born on the literal first day of spring, but I believe it’s truly the best season of all time. As the weather outside thaws, so do we.
Astrologically speaking, the first day of spring — March 21st — is considered to be the true start of the New Year. It also lands on the spring equinox, where the long winter nights (finally) lift.
On this day, the sun enters fiery Aries, the very first sign of the zodiac. Aries is the new born baby of the sky — not quite sure how to walk yet, but determined to run anyway.
Symbolized by the ram, this sign is all about energy. It’s about passion and explosiveness and excitement and newness and inevitable growth.
And you can feel it everywhere. The first feeling of sun on your face after a chilling winter, spotting little tulip buds sprouting on walks, wearing jean jackets (veryyyyy important). We did it! We made it through the dark. And now? Our reward is that endless possibilities lay ahead.
As someone born on the first day of spring (literally me repeating this for attention like a true Aries), I’ve spent 30 years curating the perfect ways to celebrate this energy renewing season. Here are some of my faves.
Set Some Intentions
Because spring is such a transformative season, intention setting is a little extra magical and powerful during this time. There’s a bit more juice to it.
There’s no one right way to set intentions, but usually I just take a few minutes to journal. If you’re not sure where to start, let spring energy be your guiding inspiration! Start by reflecting on the question “How do I want to grow this season?” and go from there.
Let it Burn
Spring is all about letting the light and warmth in. Spring equinox festivals all over the world ring in the season with fire — with rituals like torch led processions and huge bonfires.
While I would love to tap into my strega lineage and dance around a bonfire with nothing but a loin cloth on, unfortunately I don’t have the backyard space to do so (and I don’t think Toronto by-laws allow for it anyway).
Instead, you can add some extra spark to your space by using a variety of colorful candles. Every color holds meaning, and lighting specific ones can help amplify and serve as reminders of whatever your spring intentions are.
You can light something as simple as a green birthday candle for a good luck boost, or even that leftover orange pumpkin spice three-wick for a confidence kick.
While You’re at it, Light Your “Good” Candles Too
If you’ve been holding on to any fancy candles, this is a great time to burn them. Waiting for the perfect time to light that $107 Le Labo candle? Were you gifted a handmade beeswax candle from a loved one that feels too precious to burn?
ENOUGH! Spark that shit up! There’s no time like the present, and spring is the perfect reminder of that.
Make a Sunny Playlist
If your music has fallen prey to some sad girl energy over the winter, spend some time curating some high-energy, feel-good songs.
This will be perfect for inspiring some sunny spring walks too! Think: songs to stomp the runway to. Here’s mine!
Do a “Digital” Spring Clean
We all know spring is the perfect time to clear out clothes and vacuum spots you “forget” about over the winter. But I also love applying “spring cleaning” to my devices too! We spend so much time looking at our screens that they deserve a refresh.
If someone’s social media presence hasn’t been your thing, don’t be afraid of an unfollow or a mute (or tbh, even a block… been there). Delete old pics, contacts, apps you don’t use, apps you spend too much time on, files that have been hanging around your desktop.
We’re bringing in new energy offline and online this spring.
Get Your Hands Dirty
Everything on the list so far has been about planting seeds to help you bloom the rest of the year. But make sure to do that literally too.
Start your gardens, pick out your seeds, plant any clippings, and get your outdoor spaces ready. Gardening is a great physical reminder that spring isn’t about instant gratification — it’s all about growing.

Happy spring! Now get out there and light some candles and journal and plant some bulbs and delete your ex’s number, once and for all.
