Kiss 2021 Goodbye with These Uplifting Rituals

December 15, 2021

Hang your disco balls and set a countdown for midnight, it’s time to bid farewell to 2021. Somehow, we still can’t decide whether this year went by at a slug's pace or in the blink of an eye.

As we deliberate the flat circle that is time, we’re turning our attention towards making the most of the final vestiges of 2021. From the good (the launch of our new Cozzzy Collection), the bad (the pandemic), and the ugly (also the pandemic) — these uplifting end-of-year rituals are for closing this chapter on a high note.

Whether you’re all too happy to kiss this year goodbye or parting with it tearfully, here’s to ushering in impeccable vibes in 2022.

Create a Playlist

What music best summarizes 2021 for you on a personal level? Maybe it’s sad and dreary (early-year quarantine vibes), or perhaps the soundtrack to your year has been fun and upbeat to fuel those at-home dance parties.

Whatever this year had in store for you, try to sum it up in the form of a playlist — the music and melodies acting as a guided meditation on the past 365 days. Then, think ahead to 2022. Set some intentions and consider which tunes will motivate and propel you towards your goals. Or, you can just put on our whimsical winter playlist.

Set Intentions

While setting intentions in song form can help you visualize your aspirations and harness the right energy, writing them down can’t hurt. Forget about traditional “resolutions” — like vowing to hit the gym more (unless you truly want to, of course!) — and reflect on intentions that will bring you joy.

Rather than holding yourself hostage to rigid resolutions, think of how you can make space for things you enjoy, like cultivating a movement practice that will make you feel good, spending more time with people you love, or learning something new.

Pick a Word

Is there a word (think: big feelings and moments) that comes to mind when you reminisce on the past 12 months? Jot that down, too, while you’re at it. Now, think of a word you want to encapsulate the year ahead. It’s a broader and more abstract way of, yep, manifesting the intentions you’ve set.

Clear Space

This one is open to interpretation — there are so many ways to clear space for all your ambitions. Make space in your home by going full Marie Kondo (bonus points for generously donating anything that’s in good condition) or clear space emotionally by choosing to let go of things that might be holding you back. 2022 is your oyster.

Do a Tarot Reading

Curious about what’s on the horizon in 2022? Grab a tarot deck and get witchy. Whether it’s an amateur tarot reading from your best friend or a professional one from your local psychic-medium, tarot cards can be a fun way to become attuned to the world around you, hone your intuition, and reflect on the personal meaning of each card drawn.

List Your Favorite Movies, Books, and TV Shows

Do a 2021 retrospective with a round up of the movie viewings that lingered for days, the books you wished would never end, and the TV shows you, well, binged in under a week. We consume so much content all the time — and that’s not even counting TikToks. All to say, we’re willing to bet there are some favorites in there you’ve forgotten about.

Celebrate the Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice — also known as the shortest day of the year — is when the earth tilts away from the warm sun (rude!). The Winter Solstice marks a special time to honor the change in seasons and reconnect with the natural world.

Instead of celebrating with gifts and decor, consider cooking a locally-sourced feast, taking a walk in nature, or lighting a candle to symbolize all the light the sun so generously gives us. Many Indigenous communities and people celebrate the solstice through storytelling rituals, winter dance ceremonies, gathering and foraging, and other meaningful traditions.

Pen a Letter to Your Future Self

Even when it seems you’re at a standstill, things within and around you are ever-changing. The speed at which we’re working towards our aspirations can often feel glacial but, little by little, we continue to move forward (even when it doesn’t feel like it).

By writing a letter to your future self to open this time next year, you might be amazed at all the progress you’ve made — or how much your goals have shifted.

Pop a Bottle

2021 has been a whirlwind year — from isolation blues to the thrills and anxieties of life returning to a quasi-normal state. Wherever and whoever you are, we see you, you little fighter, you! With that, let’s pop a bottle, raise a glass, and kiss a stranger when the clock strikes twelve.

Indulge in Self-Care

Alternately, there’s always the option to swap bottle-popping for movie-watching and an evening of self-care in your comfiest clothes. Just think, when everyone else is waking up with a nasty hangover and a host of fresh regrets, you’ll be starting the first day of the year rested and relaxed.
