We’ve all rolled our eyes at tampon ads that depict women confidently riding horseback or nonchalantly wearing white pants, but if there’s one thing they got right, it’s that your period shouldn’t stop you from doing (or wearing) whatever you want.
With summer just around the corner, we’re diving into the biggest myths surrounding swimming on your period and giving you the low-down on Period Swimwear.
Fact or Fiction
From old folk tales of period blood attracting oceanic predators to questions of hygiene, for some reason, period swims appear to be shrouded in mystery.
These fallacies have kept people who menstruate out of the water for decades, but there’s no evidence to suggest that swimming while on your period will give you an infection—or attract sharks, for that matter.
In case you’re pondering whether you need back up protection, it’s probably not a bad idea since your period doesn’t actually stop when you’re in the water. Rather, the water pressure may reduce your flow, creating an illusion. As soon as you emerge from the water, so will will your flow.
But don’t let that stop you from cannonballing into the pool! Swimming on your period isn’t all that different from navigating it in your regular day-to-day and there's no shortage of period protection options at your disposal—from tampons to menstrual cups and Period Swimwear.
With or without these period defences, you don’t need to worry about leaving a bloody streak in the water, even the heaviest of flows and leakage will be diluted.
Period Swim
You’re on vacation or at the beach when a sneaking thought enters your mind: what if I get my period? From there, panic and preparation ensue.
Extra tampons are packed, and a pair of emergency swim trunks are stashed away in your beach bag. And despite the hot weather, you suspiciously tell everyone: You know what? I actually don’t even feel like swimming today…
With the advent of Period Swimwear, those days are passé. Whether you're in the market for a sexy One Piece, a pair of Sculpted High Rise Bottoms, something that says vintage bombshell, or a pair of Classic Bikini Bottoms,
We know what you’re thinking—and no, they don’t look or feel like a soggy diaper. In fact, the absorbent liners are so subtle, these swimsuits are just as comfy and flattering as the rest of our Swim collection.
How Does it Work?
The layers in the gusset of these bathers work to absorb blood thanks to absorbent Leakproof technology. They’re the perfect for wearing during light flows or as backup during your cycle’s heavier days.
While the inner layers of the absorbent area trap your period to prevent leakage, washing is no issue.
When you pop them in the washing machine, the previously absorbed blood will release through the top layer—leaving your swim fresh and clean for tomorrow's laps. Just remember not to use any bleach or softener, and to lay flat to dry.
