11 Last-Minute Halloween Costumes You Can Pull From Your Closet

October 26, 2022

As is customary, I usually start scheming about Halloween somewhere around the end of August. This year, I'm going to plan ahead, I think to myself. Surely, this will be the year I have the cutest, most culturally relevant costume

But, then, something happens: I blink and Halloween is just a few days out. So, when the racks of my local thrift shop have been picked dry and there's slim chance an online order will arrive in time, it's my cue to see what my closet has to offer.

With a little imagination (and a lot of hot glue), it's surprising what you can pull together in a pinch. If you've also failed to plan ahead but refuse to look anything short of fabulous this Hallo-weekend, look no further than this list of last-minute costumes that can be crafted from items you probably already own.

In retrospect, we think it's fair to say Mel C carried the band on her back. And when it comes to Halloween, Sporty Spice is also the real MVP.

This is your sign to blast your favorite Spice Girls track, put your hair in a high ponytail, strap into a sports bra, and shimmy into a pair of track pants. It's cute, it's comfy, and has a real potential for some last-minute girl squad cosplay.

Serena Williams

What better way is there to pay tribute to the GOAT's record-breaking career than with a Halloween costume that kicks just as much ass? Once you've put on your skort and tank, all that's left to do is practice your backhand. Bonus points if you craft a tennis racket out of dental floss and the remnants of your recycling bin.

Bridgerton Vibes

Here's the deal: scrounge your closet for anything (anything!) with puffed sleeves and, if anyone asks, you're [insert character name] from Bridgerton.

Pastel colors are great — and floral prints are even better. When in doubt, layer a few skirts for volume, stick some feathers in your hair, and call it Halloween night.

Mia Wallace

Let's be clear, this costume isn't overdone — it's a classic. All it takes to transform into Pulp Fiction baddie Mia Wallace is a pair of black leggings and an oversized white button-down with a little peekaboo of lace underneath.

Eleven From Stranger Things

The latest installment of Stranger Things was, arguably, the most epic season yet. As always, one of the best parts was watching our favorite supernatural conduit save the day.

The good news is, you're one white pair of shorts and bodysuit away from embodying your TV hero. In need of some sensory deprivation sunglasses? Sounds like the perfect excuse to order a greasy pizza.

Off-Duty Supermodel

It's the look we're all striving to achieve — the one that says: I just rolled out of bed, and yes I look fabulous. Channel your inner Ashley or Bella with a little help from a solid pair of shades, a sexy bodysuit, your boyfriend's button down, and a pair of figure-hugging jeans.

Barbie

The Barbie movie isn't set to be released until next summer and, yet, it remains firmly planted in 2022's cultural ether. While next year's Halloween costumes are sure to be Barbie dominated, now is your chance to get ahead of the trend.

Take your most brightly-hued swimwear out for one last spin — overtop a pair of bike shorts, of course. Extra points if you have a visor and a pair of elbow pads laying around somewhere.

Catwoman

A Zoe Kravitz inspired catwoman look is a bit like a choose-your-own-adventure. You can opt for a white tank and dark, glittery eyeliner and slay as Selina Kyle or go full catwoman — sleek leggings, black bodysuit, and all.

The Scarlet Witch

Who else remembers this iconic red bodysuit-pink tights combo from WandaVision? Crimson cape or not, this cosplay moment requires as little or as much crafting as you want. Go all out with a DIY headpiece or keep it simple with a ruby-red lip.

Princess Diana

It doesn't get much more iconic than Princess Diana's bike short and oversized sweater-clad street style. Plus, you can always repurpose the outfit for the new season debut of The Crown

Retro Fitness Instructor

When you've exhausted all other options, it's time to don your most colorful activewear. Look to 80s fitness legends Jane Fonda and Cher for inspiration.
