What Exactly Are Reusable Pads?

It’s no secret that disposable menstrual products are less than ideal for the environment.

According to National Geographic, 5.8 billion tampons were purchased in the US alone in 2018 — roughly a third of the global total. Over the course of a lifetime, menstruators are estimated to throw away roughly 400 pounds of packaging from menstrual hygiene products.

Still, pads, in particular, remain a great alternative to tampons and Leakproof Underwear — especially when it comes to back-up or overnight protection. If pads are your go-to but you’re at a loss as to how to minimize menstrual waste, we have just the thing: Reusable Pads

How Do They Work?

Harnessing the same patented technology as our period-proof undies, Reusable Pads feature multiple layers of moisture-wicking fabric that quickly absorb blood, sweat, or pee.

An ultra-thin, highly-absorbent liner locks in several tampons worth of liquid, while a liquid-resistant outer layer prevents anything from leaking out (and totally ruining your sheets).

Just like a regular pad (except sans adhesive), wing clasps easily wrap onto the sides of your underwear. They can be worn with regular underwear or with Leakproof Underwear if you’re looking for extra protection.

Once full, the pad can be folded into a square, using the closures to secure it, and rinsed before being tossed into the wash. You’ll have to change it at different intervals depending on your unique flow, but once it starts feeling wet it’s ready to be swapped out.

If you’re out and about, the used pad can be put into a pouch or baggie until you get home. The best part is, once it’s been washed and laid flat to dry, it can be used over and over again — no litter involved.

How Much Liquid Do They Absorb?

You have options — and, thankfully, neither involves wearing a bulky, uncomfortable pad.

As the name suggests, these pads are your friend if you’re looking for a sound, leak-free slumber. Though, these pads can be just as handy for heavier flow days.

Regular Reusable Pads, on the other hand, soak up 12 tsps worth of blood, sweat, or pee. It’s not quite as hefty as the overnight variety, but it’s still pretty impressive.

Plus, for each three-pack purchased, one reusable pad will be donated to The Period Purse to help alleviate period poverty.
